SHADES OF GREY
Experimenting with texture, colour, and style has always been a hallmark of my approach to painting. Recently, it seems that many artists have been inspired to paint portraits using bright colours so I felt that it was time to venture into uncharted territory using a familiar subject but experimenting a new approach.
Having always enjoyed the challenge of Black and White photography, I felt inspired to revisit the Portrait concept using a monochromatic palette of just one colour - lamp black, I used the oils with varying degrees of dilution to create the subtle shades of grey while allowing the white of the canvas to accentuate the lighter areas of the artwork.
Once the basic features were in place, I decided to expand on the concept by incorporating traditional printing colours of Cyan (blue), Magenta (Pink) and Yellow to highlight just one feature of the face; the lips. Having worked in the advertising industry we were schooled in the discipline of colour reproduction so in a way, this series paid homage to my background and experiences as an illustrator in the 1990’s.
There are five portraits in this series and are all available as part of the 2015 Giclee Print on Canvas Collection.
